  • Involved with Yellow Book since its inception
  • Led project in 1993 to develop the British Rail work instructions resulting in the Yellow Book and personally wrote a significant amount of text
  • Managed the Yellow Book project from 1996 to 2003, edited Yellow Books 2, 3 and 4, oversaw their publication and led the Yellow Book training programme
  • Delivered the first version of the Engineers' Overview training course and has since presented it on more than 50 occasions
  • Significant experience of practical engineering safety management including senior positions in safety management teams of multi-million dollar rail and air traffic services projects in Canada and the UK
Peter Sheppard Peter Sheppard
  • Experienced system safety engineer
  • Verification, validation and assessment of safety critical products and systems for light rail, metro and heavy rail in the UK and abroad
  • Practical experience of analysis of software, hardware and complete systems
  • Contributed to development of a safety critical software standard
  • Familiar with current national, European and international safety standards and their application to the railway industry
  • Regular presenter of the Yellow Book Engineers' Overview training course

  • Systems and safety manager specialising in signalling and rolling stock development and safety critical systems
  • Practical experience of analysis of software, hardware and complete systems
  • Extensive experience of the preparation of material for inclusion in safety cases for new signalling equipment and traction and rolling stock, in particular electromagnetic compatibility requirements.
  • Skilled in independent assessment and audit of safety documentation and the safety process for all types of new signalling equipment and rolling stock

  • More than 15 years experience in the delivery and assurance of safety-critical systems acquired across a broad range of industries, including the rail, aerospace and military sectors
  • Experience of project management, systems engineering and the preparation and delivery of training
  • Systems Validation Manager for the West Coast Route Modernisation Project from 1999 to 2001
  • Systems Integration and Approvals Manager for the Manchester South Capacity Improvement Project since joining Atkins in 2001
  • Made a major contribution to the introduction of an Italian computer-based interlocking into the UK
